Weight-Loss Programs: Gender is an Issue

Have you ever heard the myth that women gain weight just by looking at food? Sometimes, it seems unfair that men can stuff themselves with different kinds of food, but not gain any weight.
Indeed, gender is an issue when it comes to losing weight and that includes weight- loss programs. If you are a man thinking about losing weight, make sure that you do not follow or enroll in a weight-loss program designed for women. While it is about the same fat that we want to shed and the foods we want to avoid, fitness programs for men and women work differently. This is because men and women have different nutritional needs and require different levels of physical activity. Men are known for having a higher muscle mass and metabolic rate. Both genders gain weight differently – for example, a man may develops a beer belly, while a woman might gain weight in their thighs and arms.

Other biological factors such as hormones and menstrual cycle (for women) play a major role. This is why weight-loss programs should be different for men and women. The physical reasons are enough to determine they need separate programs.

Psychological factors also play an important role. This is because women are more inclined towards looking physically attractive – many believe that the figure and body of a woman defines her beauty, which is why they are more conscious about weight. Dietitians and physicians are also devising targeted diet programs for women. Therefore, while many women are determined to lose weight, a lot of men rarely think about it.

Men are also more focused towards working out and building muscles than dieting. Instead of focusing on shedding some extra pounds, they want to look lean and toned. If you are in your 20s, your dream would be to have a beach body. This suggests that the weight-loss program geared towards men should include more weights and an intense workout plan. The goal of the program would be to gain healthy muscle mass by following specific exercises. The diet is also different from women’s weight-loss programs. This is because certain types of foods can help men increase endurance, strength and achieve a lean body. Men can also work on their beer belly through high-intensity cardiovascular activities. For men, it is not only about looking attractive – they want to achieve more than that. The goal is to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the long run.
